Don’t Make These Rookie Mistakes When Marketing on Social Media

Social media networking sites offer ample opportunity to advertise products and services. More companies see the value in including paid advertisements on their websites, so you regularly see promotional videos, discount coupons, and offers on Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest. Although advertising is a necessary evil as it helps grow an affiliate’s business, there is a right and wrong way to market on social media.

The right way reassures the customer that he or she is making the right decision by buying the product or service offered. The wrong way is pushy, unattractive, and less-than-satisfactory. Aggressive sales tactics work but seldom produce a loyal customer. You’ll get them to click the affiliate link but nine times out of ten, they’ll abandon the shopping cart or fail to sign up for the mailing list because they feel intimidated.

Here is what you need to keep in mind about social media:

It has a built-in customer base. It already has thousands of affiliate marketers wanting to make a quick buck. You’ll need to know your audience. You’ll need to be able to stand behind the products and services that you’re offering.

  • It has a built-in customer base. This includes family members and friends and friends’ family members and friends. They are your core audience because they’re familiar with you as a person and what you do for a living as an affiliate. That doesn’t mean that they want you to push products and services on them at every given moment. It does mean, however, that you don’t have to look far to find people to market to. Be someone they can trust and they’ll buy from you regularly. If you don’t have a presence on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Pinterest, you’ll want to start building one now for credibility sake.
  • It already has thousands of affiliate marketers wanting to make a quick buck. You don’t want to be that type of salesperson. You want to make genuine connections with your customers by providing them with products and services that add value to their lives. Sure, you can profit from the relationship, but you want to have the customer’s best interests in mind so that you’ll see them return to your website and social media pages again and again. Make your dealings with Clickbank and JVZoo worth the effort you put into them.
  • You’ll need to know your audience. You want to be able to offer the right products and services to the people that find and follow you. If you’re not familiar with them and have no clue what they want, need or desire, you could end up failing sooner than you end up succeeding. That’s a real shame, too, because of the amount of effort you put into affiliate marketing. A short tweet on Twitter that includes your affiliate link may not be as fruitful as an unboxing video or product demo on YouTube.
  • You’ll need to be able to stand behind the products and services that you’re offering. If you’ve never tried the things you’re selling, you’re in for a real shock. People want to be able to trust you. How can they buy something from a company they’ve never heard of without your help? That’s why quality content is necessary. It helps guide your customers through the decision-making process. If they read a post that you’ve put up or see a flip-through of a book you’ve read, they’re more apt to believe that it has value. Again, this is the most important thing to remember as an affiliate. Customers want items that add value to their lives which is why you’ll need to know Clickbank and JVZoo well.

A home based business like affiliate marketing thrives on your ability to communicate. You don’t want to be compared to a used cars salesman. Instead, you want the features of the products and services that you’re marketing to stand out.

The way that you do that is by getting to know what you’re selling. Have a vested interest in the companies that you’re an affiliate with. This is how your home based business will thrive in the upcoming weeks, months, and years.

Social media marketing can be a viable source of income for affiliate marketers. That is if they know which mistakes to avoid. By following the advice listed above, you, too, can see greater profits with less effort. You don’t have to rely on hard selling because the products that you’re marketing virtually sell themselves. Doesn’t that sound more appealing than sleazy sales tactics that customers find offensive and obtrusive?
